|This forum software (phpBB) has a feature called User Groups. "So what," you may be thinking...
Well, in the past, we've had a lot of trouble with spammers, and in particular, porn spams, on the site. So, I set up the forums as private, requiring not only registration, but that the member be a member of the 'Regular User' user group in order to post in the forums. You could read posts, you just couldn't post, unless you were added.
Since I've added a mod to the software, requiring that you answer a random simple question, once each time you connect, the spamming has been just about eliminated, so this requirement has been removed. HOWEVER...
You may still want to request that you be added to either the O'Quin or Tiller user groups. Every so often, when I have an announcement that may be of interest to you, I send out a group email, to all members of a particular user group. If you are a group member, you will be included.
Just click the Usergroups target at the top of the page, and in the 'Non-Member Groups,' choose the family group you would like to join, select the 'View Information' button, and then click the 'Join Group' button. This causes an email message to be sent to the group manager, who will see that you get added to the group (or groups) in question.
